RYZER

“We lost him.”

“What do you mean, you lost him?” I growl over the HUD call while stalking through the woods behind Archie as he strides past the undergrowth like the hounds of hell are on his ass.

“What do you think it means you vapid-” Klezar grunts as Saru no doubt moves to shut him up. It’s a good job he did, otherwise I might have even considered ending my brother’s life just to rid myself of the filthy demon.

“He means, we-”

“No,” Archie’s broken and barely there whisper full of pain and despair silences us all.

“What’s wro-”

Archie’s mighty bellow cuts me off, the intensity of the sound causing the trees to shake and the ground to rumble underfoot. Breathing heavily, his head hangs down as his shoulders heave.

Watching intently, Blade cautiously approaches. Holding his hands out in front of him, he tentatively touches Archie on the shoulder, keeping his body arms length away. Rounding his hunched shoulders, he stops directly in front of Archie and speaks quietly before going deathly pale.

“Blade, so help me-”

A raised hand from the quietest of our group is enough to silence me and make me wait for his direction. Without another breath, all while keeping his eyes on Archie, he slowly makes his way back towards me.

“Ryzer, what’s going on?” Saru questions as Archie slowly turns round. When I don’t answer, Klezar and he both blow up the link.

“Quiet,” I hiss, my cutting command silencing them both immediately. With just a thought, I switch on the video link. Gasps filter down the line, but it’s the one from Klezar that surprises me the most. With his demonic nature and less than palatable attitude towards slaughter, I would have expected him to rejoice in the battle rage that Archie’s fallen into. Instead, a tinge of worry taints the sound he makes which is most certainly out of place for the foetid demon spawn.

Archie is the biggest out of us all and standing at seven feet tall, with arms and legs the size of a couple of tree trunks, he’s not someone to be trifled with. Especially when his sweet, calm and caring disposition is nowhere in sight. Which is why when he turns our way with his face scrunched up into a menacing scowl, and fury wafting off him in waves, my concern turns into terror.

For both our safety and others.

Although Fairies are usually known to be placid creatures, Archie’s bloodline specifically belongs to a guild of healers. Ones that share a bloodline with the fabled pixies that roam these lands. Pixies that are known to be lost to a blood rage when their brood are threatened. While Xena may not be brood, she is the next most treasured thing.

His fated mate.

Known to have razed whole villages defending what’s theirs, Archie--with his size and unusual manna capacity--poses a significant threat.

Blade creeps the rest of the way back to my side with purposeful steps. Even then, with each step of the way, Archie’s slightly pointed ears twitch with the sounds of crunching leaves under boot.
